I’ve been on quite a journey when it comes to my health. My female bits and hormones have been out of whack for years now. I had surgery about ten years ago to have uterine fibroid tumors removed — and not surprisingly, they grew right back. I didn’t know any better at the time and I listened to what a conventional ob/gyn doctor told me she thought was best instead of doing my own due diligence.
I have a dear friend who was telling me back then that I wasn’t getting to the root of the problem by just cutting out the tumors, but I told him I was too busy running my boutique to worry about all those nutritional and lifestyle choices that were in the bible-sized book he gave me. (Healing with Whole Foods). “Who has the frickin’ time when running their own business?!” My priorities were skewed… my business was more important to me than my health (and even my relationship) and I ended up paying a dear price in more ways than one. My body stepped in back then and tried to get me to slow down and pay attention, but I wasn’t ready to listen.
Here I am, years later, and I’m now facing the same health issue but I’m doing it differently this time around. I’ve now immersed myself in learning about the root cause of the fibroids (emotional and physical) instead of listening to the conventional doctors who are now telling me to have a hysterectomy. If I hear, “you don’t need your uterus anyway” one more time I might shoot someone. Seriously, I don’t need my uterus? WTF. I’m not saying that surgery is always bad, there obviously is a time & place for it, but it’s not the answer to everything! Fibroid tumors are non-cancerous… is removing your uterus really the only solution? “Oh and while we’re in there we might as well take out the ovaries too — just in case of future problems.” Oh you mean the ovaries that produce my hormones… this is their idea of preventative medicine? Yikes.
This is the same type of advice I got the first time I had the fibroids, “just take the birth control pill, it will balance your hormones and help with the fibroids — and best of all, you don’t have to have a period anymore”. Even then I remember thinking something didn’t sound right about that. No one told me about the long-term impact of taking the birth control pill.
When I attempted to take that “magic pill” my whole world got turned upside down. I felt like complete shit, emotionally & physically. My body told me that something just wasn’t right and I actually listened for once and I stopped taking it…. thank god! My current endocrinologist (hormone specialist) told me that he can see the remnants of the birth control pill in his patients’ blood-work even years & years later… now that’s a scary thought. (Btw, I sought out a MD who is holistically minded, not all endocrinologists will even discuss root cause of illnesses — I had to go to a few docs before I was lucky enough to find him.)
Ladies, please listen to your body. It’s just my opinion, but I believe we’re supposed to have our periods and our natural cycles… nature created this process for a reason. Do you really want to take a synthetic pill that tricks your body into thinking it’s pregnant? Only to have to take more man-made pills later in menopause because your hormones are completely fucked up thanks to the years of taking the pill? And we wonder why women can’t get pregnant naturally anymore…. my god, conventional medicine scares me sometimes.
Now I know that I’m making huge generalizations here and I’m not a doctor… but all I’m saying is please question your doctors, listen to your gut… and most importantly, do your due diligence and seek out advice from holistically minded doctors and experts as well. Please don’t just have surgery or take a pill because a doctor tells you it’s the best choice… oftentimes, they are getting paid by the pharmaceutical companies to prescribe those pills (and do you know how much they make from surgeries? A lot.) Doctors don’t make money from healthy people. They make their money from sick people. Please just do your research and seek guidance from healers who you trust, then make a decision. The decision that works best for YOU. No one else!
For me, the last few years have especially been a roller coaster ride of challenges and emotions. I’ve been forced to face how my life choices are directly impacting my own physical health. I truly believe that my health issues are linked to me not living in alignment with my higher self. When I don’t do that, my body steps in and forces me to slow down, wake up, and listen. Or not, and my health issues worsen.
No relationship, business, or goal is more important to me now than my self-care. And when I say self-care, I mean from the inside out. Emotional well-being is primary for me now… intertwined with my physical well-being of low-stress levels, proper nutrition, and movement. This means I have to make choices that allow me to be able to maintain my emotional & physical well-being — and these aren’t always the easy choices. I’ve had to let go of certain things and people in my life to do this… but I now know how to make conscious choices in order to protect my boundaries around self-care.
I do believe in my heart-of-hearts that I’m on the path to figuring out what’s going on with my body now… I’m starting to hear the voice deep inside of me guiding me toward my true self and living authentically. It’s been a hard process and I still have a lot of steps in front of me… but honestly, for the first time in years, I feel like I’m starting to figure out why my body brought fibroid tumors to my plate. If it hadn’t, I probably would still be “doing doing doing” and thinking that success was all about action. Now, I feel like true success is all about sharing love and living in alignment with my higher self. My priorities have drastically changed and now my nervous systems seems to be relaxing…. which I feel is the first step toward healing.
